Hawthorn Hedging


Product Description

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) or Quickthorn as it is commonly known is a very thorny plant useful as a barrier against animals, Humans and vehicles. Quickthorn is usually supplied bare rooted from november to march, but can be collected from the nursery during summer months as potted plants. Quickthorn hedging is deciduous, produces masses of white flowers in sprinf then clusters of bright red berries in autumn, popular with birds.

Guide to Planting

The plants can be planted on their own or mixed in with other species such as Beech, Blackthorn, Hedge roses, Hazel. The quickthorn plants are planted 12 inches or 30 cm apart either in a single row or as a zig zag row.

You will need 3 plants to a metre as a single row or 5 plants in a staggered zigzag hedge. Feed after planting with a top dressing of fish, blood and bone. Always water plants in after planting.

Plants are generally supplied in two sizes small and medium 15-30cm / 6-12 inches or 30-45cm / 12-18 inches tall.
